Another marvelous place in Kefalonia is Assos village, located 36 km north of Argostoli, the capital of the island. Here, you’ll find an authentic atmosphere filled with a peaceful landscape, lovely gardens and historical sites. For lovers of hiking, we strongly recommend you to enjoy the magical trail around the Assos Castle, Venetian fortification built in the 16th century by the Venetians to protect the village from pirate attacks. It’s good to make this journey early in the morning, or later in the afternoon when the sun is not so strong. Take a hat, water, and sun protection as most of the route is not shaded.

Sit in a local coffee, smell the Mediterranean breeze and enjoy a delicious seafood recipe! We’re talking about Fiscardo, a fishermen place famous for its picturesque small houses near the sea and its lovely local port. The cosmopolitan port is one of Kefalonia’s most lively places, where it docks yachts and taxi-boats that bring tourists to the neighboring islands or to the capital of Argostoli about 50 km away.

In the summer days, you’ll have the opportunity to find local fishermen selling fresh fish, it’s a great experience too. In the night, everything becomes so romantic, the water shines under the starlights and the landscape leaves you speechless. This small town recalls the times when the city was under Venetian occupation, the most productive period, expanding the fish and seafood trade.

Let’s move on and talk about the Antisamos Beach, which gained a worldwide reputation, from the Hollywoodian movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, where some of the scenes were filmed. Once you arrived here, the view is fantastic… climb up the cliff and admire the beautiful panorama right from the top. A green-blue harmony between the white pebbles, crystal water and the green of the surrounding hills will make you fall in love with the island.

If you want a little bit of adventure, Melissani Lake is worth visiting. Every year, this lake covered by the cave on the Kefalonia island is one of the main attractions. With the terrible earthquake in 1953, the roof of the cave collapsed, leaving the light in, which makes stunning reflections of the water. Visit the cave in the middle of a sunny day between 12 and 2 pm when the sun is stronger and the view is amazing

The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for its clear and deep blue water. Make sure to visit the old village Skala in the hills, about an hour walk up the hill.

Also, here you can explore for the first time sea kayaking! There are more regions from you can kayak, like Argostoli Lighthouse to Minies, Skala to Poros, Agia Kiriaki to Assos… no matter what you choose, the whole experience will give you unforgettable memories. Every trip ends with a cold drink in a local beach bar or local taverna.
