The warmest season in Mykonos is between June and September when it’s sunny, hot and the water is perfect for swimming. Water temperature heats throughout the Summer months and is warmest in August and September. Since most people go to Mykonos for the beaches (and related nightlife) it’s pretty quiet here in May and October though the weather is still quite nice.
The best option is to make your reservation through a travel agency. British Airways offer 7 flights weekly (May–Oct) from Heathrow or London City to Mykonos. Mykonos airport, 3km from town, has taxi service (€15–23 depending on destination) and far less frequent shuttle buses (two public bus stations).
There are many options – rent a car, scooter or ATV. There is a very good option… if you are more and you don’t want to stay with care for various reasons – maybe you want to drink a glass of wine at the beach or you don’t want to drive on the steep roads of the island – you can rent a car with a driver.
Explore the capital...
Chora is a beautiful ancient historic town and also the capital of Mykonos. In this place you can admire whitewashed houses with blue doors and window frames, purple bloom trees and hidden churches. For a little history, don’t forget to visit Folklore, Maritime and Archaeological Museums.
Mykonos is famous for its wide variety of appetizers such as kopanisti, ksinotira, louza and sausages, but also for wines. The thick yoghurt, honey, mykonian cheese pies, platters full of various kinds of grilled meats, a rich assortment of limes, Greek salad… are just a few of the basic menus in Mykonos.
There are also many vegetables, such as horta, gemista (tomatoes or peppers filled with rice), bryan (a kind of fried vegetable stew) or fasolakia (green beans usually made with oil, potatoes and tomatoes).
